Sony has been receiving mixed signals regarding its virtual reality headset, the PlayStation VR, which it aimed to make a key component of the PlayStation ecosystem. Despite not achieving significant sales figures with the original PlayStation VR and VR 2, the company has recently received some positive news.
PlayStation VR 2 Hits Sales Peak!
In recent weeks, the PlayStation VR 2’s ability to run games supported by products like Quest 3 and Valve Index VR, thanks to a special software release for the Steam platform, has attracted player interest. Since its release in February 2023, the PS VR 2 has achieved its highest sales rate over the past 1.5 years.
The surge in sales is not solely attributed to the PlayStation VR 2 Steam application. The device, which was launched at $550 in 2023, saw a $100 price drop to $450 at the beginning of 2024. Furthermore, recognizing the increased interest following the announcement of the Steam application, Sony has reduced the price by an additional $100 to $350 in the US and many European countries. This adjustment has allowed the VR headset to reach its highest weekly sales figures since its initial release.
As you know, Sony had been hesitant about PC support since the PlayStation VR era, but it has finally relented and announced PC support. However, the company has stated that while using the device on a PC, it will not offer haptic feedback beyond HDR, headset haptics, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, or basic vibration. The headset will still feature 2,000 × 2,040 resolution per eye, a 110-degree field of view, and finger touch detection.
